Check out all of the details on 7th grade orientation, our new dress code and the first day school! Welcome back Buccaneers!

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,

I am very excited to welcome you to our 2019 – 2020 academic year. We at Southwest Middle, pride ourselves with having dedicated students who strive to make a difference in our community, professional and caring faculty and staff, and dedicated parents. As we begin our 90th year of educating young minds, we know we will have another year of Buccaneer excellence. It is my duty and responsibility to contribute to the education of our students by providing an environment that optimizes their opportunity to learn and develop as individuals. Southwest Middle and Southwest High School have built a 6-year plan because our goal is to continue to raise student achievement and prepare students for life after middle school and high school. Our mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students to be college and career ready.

Students at Southwest Middle School will be challenged with a rigorous curriculum through the infusion of technology and integration of our STEAM focus. We have a Dual Language program and were just honored with the AVID School of Distinction Award. We are committed to providing the best possible instructional programs for each of our students.

In addition to the academics at SOM, our students have the opportunity to engage and participate in performance-based experiences through our STEAM competitions, mariachi and steel drum classes, and our many field trip opportunities. Our before and after school HYPE program offers excellent recreational options for our students. Working to ensure that we provide all students with a safe and equitable school environment to foster their individual growth and development remains at the core of our beliefs.

It is my belief that a group of committed people that are working towards a common goal can produce amazing results. It is my commitment to the Southwest Middle staff to continuously refine the instructional practices in the classroom and continue to provide support systems to meet the needs of all students. We will continue to embrace the opportunities and challenges of the 21st century and beyond.

Should you have any questions regarding your student’s progress or school programs, do not hesitate to call the teacher, counselor, or any administrator. I look forward to working with you to ensure our students have a year of excellence at Southwest Middle School.

The first day of school is July 22nd at 8:00 a.m.  It is a minimum school day. Please have your children in school no later than 8:00 AM.  I have included some important reminders on the back of this letter. If you have any questions, please call us at 619-628-4000.

Sincerely,

Julissa Gracias

Estimados Padres / Guardianes y Estudiantes,

Sinceramente,

Julissa Gracias
